Composition:
4'33" is a composition created by American experimental composer John Cage in 1952. The composition consists of 3 movements by the composer without him playing the instrument. It is Noise music which means that the composition has tension between desirable and undesirable sounds. The audience itself is contributing to the music. Coughing, heavy breathing, laughing by the audience is a part of the composition itself. The idea behind it was that there can never be true silence. Every sound you hear, if you pay attention is a music. Its individual perception. This piece was also criticised by many but still remains a very impactful piece of art till date.

Composer:
Composer of 4'33" is John Cage. His compositions were experimental and misunderstood one. Discovering the uncharted sounds was in Cage's interests. He was inspired by Zen Buddhism and Dada art movement and he tried to explore that in his 4'33" composition , that can bring social reform and perspective change in people. He understood that complete silence can never be achieved and if you pay attention to your surroundings, everything thing has a music of it own.

Reflection:
At the start I was curious and as the composition progressed I started noticing various sounds that came from the audience, Coughing, heavy breathing, laughing, etc. There was never a complete silence but there was a constant grainy noise at the background. And as I went on listen the composition I started feeling meditative and got aware of every sound the audience made and every action the composer did. Just like in every meditation are mine starts to wonder mine also did but it came back to present by composers movements even after the composition ended I felt a lingering sense of peace in my mind, all the chaos went away.

ASSIGNMENT 2

Pauline Oliveros was a very emotional person. But unlike many she didn't ignore the signals sent by her brain. Instead she went deeper into the emotions and bought it out in music. She knew where the world was heading beforehand and therefore wanted change in mindset of people. She knew that most of the worlds problems will sort if we listen to each other carefully. Her experiments were not only with sound but with the mind and body also. Her observation about how the society is affecting your body was really really accurate. Before, reading the piece on Pauline I didn't think that meditation can be thought of in sonic form. The steps in it involves a lot of self reflection.

Sonic Meditation XVI (Pauline Oliveros) is an audio visual composition. As I started to see the video I knew what it was trying to achieve, bringing the audience to meditative state. But I personally was not able to feel as much maybe because of my past experiences that I have seen such videos before or maybe the fact that I saw it just after I woke up or any other unknown reason. I found 4'33" more meditative. But I understand that the Pauline Oliveros "Sonic Meditations" are not just to be heard or seen, but it has to be experienced with conscious efforts. That is why they involve several steps.

ASSIGNMENT 3

MIDI Its my first time using MIDI and it seems intimidating but fun. From what I could understand about Musical instrument digital interface or MIDI is that it is tool which can create sounds of many devices using just one interface, it can be digital or tangible. I couldn't imagine creating music with a fan. And it is possible using MIDI, which is amazing in itself. It's like having the power to play all the musical instruments and beyond that, without having to actually learn them!

MIDI not only helps you play around with various types of sounds but it communicates with any musical instrument that has inbuilt MIDI controller and send notes to the digital interface, from their we can manipulate the notes received from the instrument in infinite number of ways.
