Reaction to John Cage:

Without any introduction to John Cage or about 4'33, I headed into the piece with zero expectations. As the performance began I was hoping there would be a subversion of expectation. The whole piece felt like one big build-up. The music or the absence of music makes one think about what music means. The context of playing a piece in front of an audience with no physical sound is a very shocking juxtaposition. I think the provocative piece was meant for the audience to think about what music actually is or maybe what the absence of music means

Pauline Oliveros

Pauline Oliveros was someone who wanted people to understand the difference between hearing and listening. Listening being the conscious effort one puts oneself into the sounds being produced around them. The act of listening to itself can be meditative, when one carefully listens to the sound waves being produced around them it helps one to get out of one's own head and helps one in being more in the present. (ie in time)

Sonic Meditation XVI

The music starts with multiple layers from the start. The eerie echoing heavy noise at the start gives a vibe as you are standing in an abandoned church. Like a choir of people who all died but still continue to sing. Towards the end, the song fades out real slow. The music is haunting and meditative at the same time.

MIDI

Midi is a set of standards for connecting musical instruments to a computer. The MIDI interface records the notes you want and changes the sounds of the notes to any musical instrument you want. This lets you use your keyboard to record beats, add piano, guitar, or any instrument of one's choice.

Although that was the original purpose now it's used for lot of other purposes aswell. For eg It can be used to trigger lighting changes when it is sent from an audio console to a lighting console, it can also be used to trigger video playback also.
