PARI ARCHIVE

Mriganka Singh

People's Archive of Rural India (PARI) is a digital journalism platform in India. It was founded in December 2014 by veteran journalist, Palagummi Sainath, former rural affairs editor of The Hindu, author of the landmark book "Everybody Loves a Good Drought" and winner of numerous national and international awards. PARI focuses on rural journalism and publishes articles, videos and photo stories in numerous categories including Farming and its Crisis, Things We Do, Adivasis, Dalits and Resource Conflicts. PARI's stories are translated in as many as thirteen Indian languages. PARI showcases the occupational, linguistic and cultural diversity of India and covers a countryside that the dominant media usually ignore.

The Indian Sonic Research Organisation (The ISRO) is a collective of instrument builders and artists dedicated to the proliferation of experimental music and sound art. They run a community music lab in Bangalore where they make, perform, teach and collaborate through workshops, performances and artist residencies. Their independent record label disseminates works by Asian composers, sound artists and musicians from India and abroad. The Indian Sonic Research Organisation values the sharing and dissemination of ideas through an open source model. They run workshops for adults and children that explore concepts of sound, electronics, programming and physics. They design educational kits for public distribution to emphasise the value of hands on making. Their projects and programs are fundamentally rooted in the facilitation of workshops, mentorships, apprenticeships and other educational activities.

I am Mriganka Singh, a fourth year student at Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology; majoring in Digital Media Arts. During my internship with The Indian Sonic Research Organisation, I am interested in sound art and the research based possibilities of the field in India. I researched for the same through the resources provided on the People’s Archive of Rural India.

I categorised the sources as Unconventional Intruments, Children and Music, Children's Books, Ancient Instruments, Folk Muisc, Pandemic and Musicians, Dying Art Forms, Music and Dissent, Juxtaposition of Reality and Songs, Disappearing Sounds and Sound as Constant Reminder.
