EDGARD VARÈSE – AMÉRIQUES

Amériques is the very first piece written by Edgard Varèse in 1918, this piece is almost 25 minutes long and was first premiered on 9 April 1926 by the Philadelphia Orchestra , the approach of this piece was really modern and sophisticated in its time because of the tunes that were created, as the name suggests Amériques I think its trying to showcase what America is all about in terms of its culture, people and environment and that’s why a lot of instruments used were inspired by American culture. It was very rhythmic yet very complex piece with the use of different instruments a lot of different and modern tunes were created and one of interesting element used to create its sound was the use of sirens or horns in the background which was quite overpowering the whole composition according to me, but is a very crucial element in this piece.

The starting of this composition was really soft and slow but gradually it becomes very high pitched and I felt it was getting little flustered towards the end because of all the sirens and drums in the background but most part of the piece was quite consistent although I didn’t understand the whole piece but I could feel it was trying to express its love for the city. The elements that were used to create this composition were really powerful and there impact was really massive ,I mean the higher notes in the piece were quite there and it made me a little uncomfortable in the sense that I had to turn the volume down completely and also, I felt that some parts of the compositions were really aggressive, but later when I heard it for the second time the same piece made me think how dramatic and curious it was, maybe it was the rhythm or some texture in the background of the composition that made me feel like that.

KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN – TELEMUSIK Telemusik is composition created in 1966 by Stockhausen it’s a 17 minutes long piece and was created during his trip to Tokyo where he was invited by Japan Broadcasting corporation. This composition is actually an electronic composition which is created using local materials or objects like some sounds used in this composition are inspired by sound of water or buzzing according to me, this composition consists of variety of sounds which are created to capture the ethnicity of that place . This composition started with just one single sound and gradually all elements or sounds started to overlap each other and I felt it was no melody rather it was more like a composition with different sounds forced together in one single frame although one interesting point was among all the elements none of them repeated itself, some were similar but I think each sound represent a specific thing special to Tokyo. The compositions was high pitched all through there was no break in between, which became quite irritating for me but I think that was the whole point of this composition. This composition has a total of 32 elements and each of them is specific to Tokyo , its inspired from its culture, architecture and people. Overall I think it wasn’t a complete composition and was just a mixture of different sounds.
